The Power of Our Thoughts: Shaping Habits, Behaviour and Our Future

Our thoughts are not mere fleeting notions. They hold an incredible amount of power—shaping our decisions, influencing our behaviours, and even defining the course of our lives. In many ways, our thoughts become the foundation upon which our habits are built, and our habits in turn dictate our actions. Over time, these repeated behaviours become part of who we are, guiding us toward or away from the lives we want to lead.

What is often overlooked, however, is the profound impact that our thoughts have on the subconscious mind—the silent yet powerful force driving our daily choices. The subconscious mind is responsible for the patterns, reactions, and behaviors we engage in without conscious thought. And when we begin to understand this connection between thought and action, we gain the ability to reshape our lives, break free from limiting habits, and take control of our futures.

The Power of Thought

Our thoughts are not just abstract ideas; they are the invisible force behind our actions. Every decision we make, every relationship we nurture, every habit we form—all of these are influenced by the way we think. The way we perceive ourselves and the world around us is shaped by the thoughts we allow to dominate our minds.

In recent months, I have found myself listening to a variety of thought leaders, especially those featured in The Resilient Mind podcast. One of the most impactful voices in this realm has been Dr. Joe Dispenza. His work revolves around the concept that our thoughts can either imprison us in the past or help us break free to create a new future. Dr. Dispenza's teachings have played a pivotal role in the renewal of my own mind, and he offers profound insights into how thoughts influence our behaviour and how that behaviour, in turn, shapes the habits that define our lives.

Dr. Dispenza argues that if we want to make significant changes in our lives, the first step is to examine and reprogram our subconscious minds. The subconscious is where our habits, attitudes, and even emotions are stored. If we want to change our actions, we must first change the thoughts that fuel those actions. This is easier said than done, but understanding the power of thought is the first step toward transformation.

The Influence of the Subconscious Mind

We all have daily habits—some of them empowering and others limiting. These habits are largely driven by the subconscious mind, which works tirelessly behind the scenes to govern our behaviour. Think about your morning routine. What are the first thoughts that come to your mind when you wake up? Do you hit the snooze button multiple times, dreading the day ahead? Or do you spring out of bed with excitement, ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead?

For many of us, the simple act of getting out of bed in the morning is influenced by a pattern of thought that we've cultivated over time. Maybe we wake up and immediately start thinking about everything we don’t want to do, or the challenges we’d rather avoid.

These negative thoughts can manifest in our behavior by making us reluctant to rise and face the day. In my own life, I’ve seen how powerful thought patterns can be in shaping our actions. For a while, I found myself struggling with getting up early—repeatedly hitting the snooze button and falling back into a familiar routine of procrastination.

But recognizing this habit was the first step toward changing it. I began to take control of my thoughts and consciously reprogram my subconscious mind to align with a new set of behaviors. I set the intention to change my morning ritual, and with time, I rewired my brain to wake up and act without hesitation.

Creating Empowering Habits

Our thoughts not only influence our daily routines but also determine the types of habits we cultivate. Habits are essentially patterns of behavior that are repeated so frequently that they become automatic. Whether they are empowering or disempowering habits is largely determined by the thoughts we allow to shape them.

One habit I’ve worked to establish over the past few years is a consistent morning workout routine. This is something I began in 2021, and it has since become ingrained in my daily life. Every morning, my alarm goes off at 5:05 AM. I then get up at 5:25 AM, put on my gym gear, and head to the gym for a personalized workout session. This habit is no longer a matter of conscious decision-making; it’s a subconscious action that takes place automatically. The same goes for the other habits I’ve cultivated over time, such as my reading and meditation routines.

At the start of each day, I listen to Lectio 365, a meditation practice that helps me centre my thoughts and reflect on my purpose. This brief but powerful practice serves as a foundation for my day, grounding me in the present moment and providing clarity as I move forward. This meditative ritual is not only a way to pause and reflect but also an intentional way of training my subconscious to stay focused on what truly matters.

By incorporating practices like these into my daily routine, I’ve been able to reset my subconscious mind, training it to focus on positive, productive behaviours that align with my goals and values.

The Role of Self-Awareness

The key to reshaping our lives lies in developing self-awareness. Without awareness of our thoughts and behaviors, it is easy to fall into old patterns that no longer serve us. This is something I was reminded of just recently by a close friend. Despite my progress, it’s always possible to slip back into self-sabotaging habits. We are not immune to the past, and the temptation to revert to familiar but unhelpful behaviours can be strong.

However, the power to change lies in our ability to harness the strength of our thoughts. When we encounter setbacks or feel ourselves slipping into old habits, we can return to the practices and thought patterns that have served us in the past. In doing so, we recalibrate our minds and course-correct. The challenge is not that we will never experience difficulties or setbacks, but that we must learn to respond to these challenges in a way that reflects the new mindset we are trying to cultivate.

Self-awareness allows us to observe our thoughts without judgment. It gives us the space to recognize when negative or limiting thoughts begin to take root, so we can consciously choose to redirect them. Instead of allowing ourselves to fall into a spiral of negativity, we can actively shape our thoughts to reinforce the habits and behaviors that serve our highest good.

Rewiring the Mind for Success

The process of rewiring the mind is not an overnight transformation. It requires consistent effort, patience, and self-compassion. But the results can be life-changing. By becoming more conscious of our thoughts and aligning them with our goals, we can begin to break free from old, unhelpful patterns and create new, empowering ones.

The key to success lies in the small, seemingly insignificant moments where we choose to direct our thoughts in a positive, intentional way. Whether it’s choosing not to hit the snooze button in the morning or taking time each day to reflect and meditate, these moments add up over time, building a foundation for lasting change.

When we learn to master our thoughts and habits, we unlock the potential for growth, resilience, and fulfillment. The subconscious mind, once reprogrammed, becomes an ally in the pursuit of our goals, driving us toward a future that aligns with our deepest desires and values.

Conclusion

Our thoughts are far more than fleeting ideas. They are the powerful force that shapes our habits, behaviors, and, ultimately, the lives we live. By becoming aware of the influence our thoughts have on our subconscious minds, we can begin to reshape our daily routines and make conscious choices that align with our future aspirations.

As I continue to work on resetting my own subconscious mind, I am reminded that no one is immune to falling back into old habits. But the key to long-term transformation lies in our ability to harness the power of our thoughts, stay committed to our growth, and continually adjust our behaviors to reflect the person we are becoming. Through this process, we can break free from the past and create a future that is aligned with our true potential.
